Fostering Opportunity and Growth through Connection

As part of this month’s #WomenWhoInspire series, we talk with Adrienne Young, PE, about the role of community – and other women – in her work and life, the OHM Advisors Women in Field Services group and what it means to her.

Quick Facts

  • Title: Construction Project Engineer
  • Years in the Industry: 19

Advancing community from the inside out

After years of designing highways in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., Adrienne Young was looking for a change. While working remotely for a previous company, Adrienne realized she wanted to work on projects closer to home and see her engineering work come to life. She found that opportunity at OHM Advisors. Adrienne is a Construction Project Engineer and enjoys the variety of experiences her role provides, whether it’s reviewing inspection reports, writing proposals, or visiting job sites to see projects take shape.

Adrienne’s interest in the multi-faceted environment at OHM Advisors aligns with the mission of our Women in Field Services group: creating a “hallway” environment for all women involved in OHM’s Field Services to connect and foster opportunities for collaboration, growth and support. The group, founded in 2021, is open to all staff members at OHM Advisors who wish to further the group’s mission. As the current leader, Adrienne recently emceed and helped plan the third annual Women in Field Services Summit, a two-day event attended by more than 30 OHM Advisors team members. We talked with Adrienne about the group, the Summit, and what inspires her at OHM Advisors.

Tell us about the OHM Advisors Women in Field Services Group.

We owe our start to Traci Robinson, one of our firms principals, who saw the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing. The group began with six women who set the mission, vision, and core values. Today, more than 50 individuals are in the group. We meet virtually throughout the year, chat regularly on Teams, and convene in person at our annual summit.

Group members typically work on job sites regularly (field first) or engage in fieldwork (field adjacent). There’s a variety of roles – from field ecologists and construction technicians to administrative assistants and fleet managers. While our roles are diverse, the work we do is interconnected. I love the networking within this group and knowing that we support and learn from each other. The program exemplifies the culture of excellence at OHM Advisors, and I appreciate the firm’s commitment to fostering these important connections.

The third annual Women in Field Services Summit happened last month. Are there any memorable moments you’d like to share from the conference?

There are many, but the presentation by our Tennessee Survey Manager stands out. She is relatively new to OHM Advisors, so it was the first time many of us had met her in person. I was blown away by her knowledge, delivery, and perspective based on her vast experience, including her role as a Certified Floodplain Surveyor. It was truly inspiring and an example of why the Summit, and bringing people together to learn from each other, is powerful.

What do you enjoy most about your work at OHM Advisors?

I love working on big impactful projects, especially major state roadways for the Michigan Department of Transportation. Whether we’re replacing guard rails or milling and resurfacing, it’s fulfilling to improve highways that so many people rely on. I also value OHM’s culture and mission of Advancing Communities. I’ve never worked for a company involved in so many communities, including my own.

On a personal level, I have daughters who are 9 and 11. I try to be a strong example to them and to demonstrate that their opportunities in this world are endless. We talk about what a licensed engineer does, and they are seeing it firsthand right now with curb ramp replacement and resurfacing in our neighborhood – which is so fun for us! I’ve had amazing opportunities in my career and gained so much knowledge over the years, and I love sharing what I’ve learned with my girls.

What’s a little-known fact about you?

I am an audio learner and have an uncanny ability to recall song lyrics from the 1990s and 2000s.
