Comprehensive Design Process Delivers 21st Century Education Result
The West Liberty-Salem Local School District partnered with OHM Advisors to help reimagine its existing 159,000 sf K-12 school building, originally built in 1985, to upgrade and improve the overall quality of the learning environment for its students. When the District established a goal to convince its community that a modern, inspired school of the future was worth the required levy money, we brought together a team of experts to help. We conducted space programming and feasibility studies, interviewed school staff for feedback on necessary and desired functionality, engaged the local community in an extensive opinion process, and incorporated it all into a final plan design supporting the needs of 21st century learners.
The renovated campus evolved from a collaborative approach involving architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design and civil engineering to update and expand the space. It includes new kindergarten and first grade classrooms, a state-of-the-art high school science wing, multiple outdoor spaces for student and staff use, a renovated gymnasium, new media centers, reconfiguration of all major education spaces, and much more. The buildings boast adaptable learning spaces, integrated technology, improved lighting and air quality, and widespread enhancements including an extensive reconfiguration of site circulation to improve safety. In addition, a main entrance was created to improve visitor access and building security.
