City of Detroit and OHM Advisors Neighborhood Plan Project Wins 2021 MAP Planning Excellence Award (VIDEO)
East Warren / Cadieux Neighborhood Framework Plan recognized for "Outstanding Economic Development and Planning”
The Michigan Chapter of the American Planning Association (MAP) has awarded The City of Detroit and OHM Advisors a 2021 MAP Planning Excellence Award for “Outstanding Economic Development and Planning” for their newly created action plan for the growth of three Detroit neighborhoods.
MAP’s Excellence Awards honor outstanding plans, projects or initiatives in several categories across the planning spectrum, including outstanding Economic Planning and Development recognition for efforts to transform economies and stimulate development in communities of all sizes. The City of Detroit and OHM Advisors together created a focused redevelopment plan for the East Warren / Cadieux neighborhoods of Morningside, East English Village and Cornerstone Village intended to guide both short- and long-term growth and investment and enhance the quality of life in these areas.
Key to the plan’s creation was intensive public engagement with residents for more than a year throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic to weave the spirit of the neighborhoods into suggested solutions to meet the City’s goals for the initiative. Award jurors noted, “The number of people engaged and having had input in the process is very impressive given the challenges that were faced.”
The award-winning plan is built on inclusionary growth, economic opportunity and an atmosphere of trust. It suggests redevelopment efforts in four distinct focus areas including the rehabilitation and restoration of vacant housing, the introduction of mixed-use development at opportunity sites, a focus on parks and public spaces, and mobility improvements and streetscape enhancements to commercial corridors.
The City of Detroit and OHM Advisors Planning and Landscape Architecture and Urban Design teams will be recognized for the East Warren / Cadieux Neighborhood Framework Plan at an awards reception this fall.
